There are quite a few big name stores and websites that you can set up a baby registry on. Deciding which one can be overwhelming.
When I was pregnant with my first baby, I started 3 registries at 3 different stores…Seem extreme? It was but I was confused and saw things I liked at this store but not that store, etc. So 3 registries it was. I did not even consider Amazon for a registry. Mostly because I had no idea they even had that option.
Looking back, Amazon would have been the perfect registry. I have been an Amazon Prime member for years as well as Amazon Family (formally Amazon Mom) which has awesome coupons so having a baby registry at Amazon would have been a great fit for me.
Not only does Amazon carry over 250,000 baby products, it’s competitive pricing makes saving money really easy.
So, How Does Amazon Baby Registry Work?
Amazon Baby Registry works like any other registry. You are able to sort through thousands of items from diapers to strollers to breastfeeding products with a click of a button. When you find items you like, you simply add them to your registry.
You are given a link so your friends and family can easily find your registry or they can search by name from Amazon’s main page. Easy Peasy!
Shop Amazon – Most Wished For in Baby
Here are some of the features and benefits of an Amazon Baby Registry:
- You get a 10% off Select Items coupon (15% if you are a member of Amazon Family/Prime) to complete your registry
- Here’s how that works: Select items that you personally purchase from your registry within 30 days of your baby’s due date (up to $5000) and you get an extra 10% off.
- You are lucky if you get all your items purchased for you from your registry, but for most the reality is that you need to purchase some remaining things. This coupon coupled with Amazon’s already low prices is amazing! Having Amazon Family gets you an even better coupon at 15% off! More on that later…
- Easily update your registry from your mobile device
- Friends and Family can ship directly to you (based on the address you put on your registry) or to anywhere else
- Easy 90-day returns
- Amazon makes returns easy and fast. A big plus is no waiting in line at a store! And don’t worry, Aunt Betty won’t know you returned her gift.
- Friends and Family can mark items bought in stores as “purchased” on your registry
- I know some people are Old School and still enjoy going to a physical store to buy a gift. Amazon has this great feature that allows your friends and family to mark an item on your registry as “Purchased.”
- So after reviewing your registry, they can head to their local baby store and buy any of the items and then mark it off your registry. This is a great feature to help cut down on duplicate items and appeal those that don’t want to order online (or who procrastinated and need a gift same day…).
- Find everything you need for your baby and more
- Amazon has so many products that you really can find everything you need and some you didn’t know you need.
- Add products from any site, not just Amazon
- Yes, you read that right, you can add products from other sites to your Amazon registry. So, if by some chance you like an item not carried by Amazon and want to add it to your list, Amazon makes it easy!
- It is done by simply adding a tool to your browser from the Amazon site.
- You can get that tool here.
- It does require that you use a desktop computer, however. You simply go to the Amazon tool page, drag the “Add to Registry” button up to your browser tab, and anytime you are on another site you can use the button to add to your registry. Great option if you see an item that Amazon does not carry so you can keep all your items on one list.
- Here is how to add the tool to your browser:
What is the Difference Between Amazon Prime and Amazon Family?
I mentioned that you can get 15% off instead of 10% off to complete your registry if you have Amazon Family. The question is asked a lot about what the difference is between Amazon Prime and Amazon Family. So let me clear that up.
Amazon Prime
Amazon Prime is a service that you pay a yearly fee to get a variety of benefits which include:
- FREE two-day shipping (no min order size or dollar amount) on all items with the Prime icon
- FREE Streaming for Ad-Free Music with Prime Music
- FREE Streaming for over 40,000 movies and TV shows with Prime Video
- Prime Photos – Unlimited Photo Storage
- FREE Kindle Books
- and more
The best feature of Amazon Prime to me is the free two-day shipping. One of the best parts about using Amazon is the huge savings you can get on certain items. If you add shipping costs when you buy online, it cuts into the savings and can make it not worth it. So having free shipping on unlimited items at any price is huge. I can’t tell you how many times I have ordered something only to find it on my doorstep the next day. So it is fast!
There is a free 30-day trial offer that you can take advantage of if you have not yet tried Amazon Prime. Click here to view those details: Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial
Amazon Family
Amazon Family is basically an add-on to Amazon Prime. It is free to sign up for Amazon Family if you have a Prime account. So not completely free since you have to be a paying Prime member.
Amazon Family benefits include:
- All Amazon Prime benefits
- 20% off Diaper Subscriptions – Huge savings if you sign up to receive regular shipments of diapers
- 15% off Baby Registry items
- Exclusive coupons and deals
- Optional access to Amazon FreeTime Unlimited – An all-in-one subscription for kids that offers unlimited kids books, movies, TV shows, apps, and games. This service is an extra $2.99 per month.
- Early access to Amazon Lightning Deals
I would say the main benefit of Amazon Family is the coupons. You can get some great deals on diapers using the 20% off coupon. That’s huge! The other deals and coupons are good too. You can get discounts on items like shampoo, clothes, grocery items, etc. The savings can really add up.
Plus with your two-day free shipping, no more running out to the store last minute!

Jenna Brookes says
Many moms-to-be already have an Amazon account, so creating an Amazon Baby Registry can seem like a natural choice. With Amazon, you have access to almost all of the brands and products you love in one convenient place. Plus, you can get discounts, free samples, easy returns and free two-day shipping on registry items.

Very true! Especially in today’s environment, online registries are the best and easiest way for family and friends to shop! Thank you for your comment!

When you make your baby registry do I have to pay for the shipping or that will be covered when everyone purchase the items that I need? It my first registry and I’m a bit confused ?♀️ So am asking.
Heather Grace says
Hi! That’s a great question. The person that makes the purchase off your registry would pay for shipping. Not you.
Rachel Williams says
If my daughter in law shares her amazon registry link now, but the shower isn’t until April, if she adds items.to the registry will it notify the people who shes sent the link too? Or Will she have to resend each time???
Heather Grace says
No, I don’t believe it notifies anyone as in sending a message that she added items. They will, however, see the items she has added each time they view it. So it won’t omit the items just because she added the items after she sent them the link. Does that make sense? I don’t think she should worry too much about that since most people shop closer to the shower date anyway. A host could send a reminder link a few weeks from the shower if they choose for good measure. I hope that helps!

For larger ticket items on Amazon’s Baby registry, like strollers and cribs, can multiple people contribute to the same item?
Inquisitively,
Leon
Heather Grace says
I have never tried this nor seen the option to do so. I would think they only workaround would be to have some purchase gift cards and “gift” them to the person who will make the ultimate purchase. It’s easy to upload the cards virtually (they can be sent to your email and easily linked to your Amazon account). This might be the best way to purchase one big item for the registrant.
Allie says
I noticed something was purchased from my registry and when I checked again few mins or hours later it was no longer purchased anymore I’m just curious the what happened
Heather Grace says
I wonder if the person who purchased it canceled the order. Perhaps the item was going to be delayed or they decided to get you something else, etc. I am sure there is a good explanation for it! The good news is that if you do end up getting any duplicates, the return policy for items on your registry has you covered!

Thank you for this amazingly detailed information on Amazon’s baby registry. We have been trying to get one started and this answered all our questions. Thank you!
Heather Grace says
Hi Lou,
I am so glad that you found the article helpful! It can all be confusing but once you get started it is very easy! Best wishes!

Hi
I want to start a registry.. if I return any gift which is unwanted or repeated how does the credit on that product work?
Will the amazon credit for returned product stays in my prime account or will it go back to purchaser.?
Heather Grace says
Hi, great question!
There is a process for returning an item purchased from your registry. You can see that process, here. The credit for the item will be given to in the form of a gift card loaded onto your Prime account. It is always best to double-check with Amazon before returning it to get specifics for that item but if it was added and purchased from your Registry, there should be no issue as you have a full year to return it.
Keeley says
I returned an item from my baby registry more than 7 days ago. Will I get the money for this to put towards other baby items or is this returned to the person who purchased it. Also, If I get the money how and when and where can i get it?
Heather Grace says
This is a great question. There are a lot of factors here. If you returned the items through your registry using the “Thank you and returns” link from your registry, then you should see a gift card loaded to your account. The timeframe will depend on who the seller was and the item. You are better off reaching out to Amazon directly (use their Chat feature, it’s fast and you will get am immediate answer!). You can see the steps for returns, here. Hope that helps!

When did your gifts arrive? I had several items on my registry purchased by friends and family a month ago that havent made it to my house. Will the be delivered on the Baby Shower Date I provided?
Heather Grace says
Hi. This is going to depend on the seller of the item (3rd party vs Amazon) and if your friend or family member was a Prime Member. They should be able to track their purchase so I would suggest having them reach out to Amazon if it’s been a month. That doesn’t seem normal at all. And no, I didn’t receive the gifts on the baby shower date. They each arrive at different times.
In fact, I recently bought a gift for a friend of mine off their Amazon registry and it arrived at their doorstep 2 days later…
Mary Ellen Jesien says
I put the final payment toward a baby stroller which was listed at $199 on an amazon registry. I was trying to find out when it would be delivered and found out that the price had suddenly increased to $239. How can you secretly raise the price on an item that is listed for $199 and was purchased. I would not have known that the price was increased if I had not called to find out when the item was to be delivered. They said that the gift would not be delivered and that the registrant would have to call an order it with the $ 199.98 gift cad she received and she would have to pay the additional $39.40 since the price was increased after we purchased it in-full for $199.98 I was so aggravated that Amazon can do this and for the fact that it is so hard to talk to a person. I spoke to about three people , trying to resolve this issue which made no sense. They were all very courteous, and I was transferred to another Supervisor but I had to hang-up as I was very upset and I knew my blood pressure was going up. You expect that once you pay the full price for an item, it will be delivered to the registrant. I was told she received a gift card for $199.98 as that was the total price asked so why are you asking for more money. Don”t you lock in prices? I am very unhappy with how Amazon runs this registry.
Heather Grace says
I am sorry you had that experience. That all seems very, very strange. Was the listing price a mistake? I can’t quite understand how that would happen either. I have never heard of anything like this happening with Amazon even outside their baby registry (I use Amazon almost daily). What a mess! Well, I hope it all gets resolved soon for you! I’m sure there is an explanation for the mistake. Tip for dealing with Amazon: Use the Live Chat! I always have better luck with that than trying to call! Take care!

Hi! thanks for all the information. Do you know if is possible for my family in Mexico to bought me things from my list from there? And how they would be charged in terms of the shipping?
Thanks again!
Heather Grace says
Hi Gabby,
It should not be an issue for someone in Mexico to view and shop your registry on the US Amazon site (they can even login using their Amazon account if they have one on their country site). And because it is not being shipped to their address but to the address listed on your baby registry, I would imagine the shipping should not reflect international charges. I don’t see how them being in Mexico would cause any increased cost BUT what I am unsure of is Amazon’s currency conversion rate. So unless they have a way to pay in US currency, they will have to pay Amazon’s conversion rate. This might be worth reaching out to Amazon directly about to get a better understanding if your family is needing to pay in Pesos vs Dollars.
Your family might be able to shop the item on the local Amazon site for their county (amazon.com.mx) and look at the cost of international shipping vs the curency conversion rate but I would imagine it’s cheaper to just pay the Amazon currency conversion rate though.
Great question!

when an item is purchased from the baby registry do the recipients know who bought it? The shower is a month away and my nephew is already saying thank you for the gifts!!
P.S. The gifts were sent to my house.
Heather Grace says
Yes! There is a “Thank you note” feature where the registry owner can see who made the purchase and send a thank you note. There is also a “Don’t spoil my surprise” setting a registry owner can use that does allow them to see any of the gifts purchase so they can be surprised at the shower. Sounds like your nephew is checking the registry and already using the thank you note feature.

Hello 🙂 I just had my baby shower yesterday and there are about 20 small items remaining on my amazon registry. Within the next few days, my husband and I plan to purchase the remaining items on the registry. I’m a prime member so I know I’ll receive 15% off, but I’m confused as to 15% of what? Is it 15% of the last items that are in my cart (which will be $250 worth) OR is is 15% of the total items that were purchased by myself or anyone else that said “completion discount eligible”? For example, say I had $500 worth of items on the registry that were eligible for this discount, would I receive a discount of 15% of 500? Or would the eligible items in my cart while completing the registry be the only things discounted? I apologize if this is confusing! I know babies R us sends a gift card worth 10% of what was purchased from the registry if it’s completed before the baby’s due date. So our babies R us registry is now completed and there was a total of $1,400 spent… so in 12 weeks we’ll receive an ecredit from babies R us for $140. I wasn’t quite sure if the 15% discount from amazon worked in a similar way, applying to all eligible items in total or just what’s in the final shopping cart.
Thank you very much for your time!
Heather Grace says
Hi Amber,
Congratulations on your little one! It is confusing, I agree! With Amazon, the 15% will apply only to the eligible items that YOU purchase. So anything that is left, you go to the redeem the completion coupon button from your baby registry page and all eligible items will appear. You have to add the items to your cart from this view only. The discount will show at checkout.
I would love to see Amazon do something similar to Babies R Us with the credit they give back for the total amount purchased. That is a great feature. But the 15% for Prime members on Amazon is not so bad either. I hope this clears it up and I wish you a healthy and happy pregnancy and birth!

Thank you for sharing this info. It was very helpful.

I am glad it helped, Sam! It all can be very confusing. Thank you for your comment!

Will people ordering off my registry have the same benefits as me as a prime member in terms of shipping and discount prices?
Heather Grace says
Great question! Standard shipping rates will apply based on the person actually ordering from Amazon, not based on your membership. They will be eligible for free shipping from Amazon on orders over $49, however, if they are not a Prime Member.
Most baby registry sites do charge for shipping (unless it is going to a store for pick-up) so I think this is pretty standard. One nice feature of the Amazon registry is that you can add items from various sites to it. So if there are some items you want to give people the option to pick up in a store, you could just add that item from a store like Target, etc. You don’t have to add just Amazon items to the registry which makes it a nice place to consolidate your registries instead of having 2 or 3 different ones.
Denise says
Hello,
Are you automatically a member of Amazon family if you are a prime member? I am a prime member and my little bundle of joy will be here in less than two months. I haven’t started shopping at all. It will be easier for me to do it with Amazon because of their excellent range of products like you mentioned and very competitive prices.
Heather Grace says
Yes, if you already have a Prime Membership then you qualify to sign up for Amazon Family at no further charge. Just go to http://www.amazon.com/family to update your profile. Once you sign in you should be able to add it. Then you will start receiving coupons for diapers and other benefits. Then, if you create a registry, you get the added benefit of being a Prime member. Good stuff! Congratulations on your baby!
Heather Grace says
Hi Sharyn,
The recipient is able to return gifts to Amazon for items on their registry. For any 3rd party items (non-Prime) or items link from other websites, that will depend on the seller’s return policy. Best to check with Amazon for item-specific questions.
Heather Grace says
Hi Mitchel! Great question- unfortunately, no. The completion coupon only works on items that are Prime items. So those handled by Amazon. So, no, items from other websites that you link to will not be eligible for this discount.
Heather Grace says
I am glad to hear it! Blessings to your family!
Heather Grace says
Hi! Yes, one of the best parts about the registry with Amazon is that they allow you to add links to other websites. You don’t just have to include items from Amazon.
Heather Grace says
You are welcome! I am glad it helped!
