Update: The Ameda Finesse is available to purchase now! You can order yours, here!
Have you heard of the Ameda Finesse?
Probably not. Well, not yet anyway…
I was sent an Ameda Finesse Breast Pump to try from Areoflow Breast Pumps. This is a brand-spanking new pump that was available for pre-order only (as of July 2017). It will be coming on the market soon and I was thrilled to give it a try!
Why is the Finesse so exciting? Well, Ameda designed this light weight personal pump after the technology in their hospital grade pump, the Ameda Platinum. As a pumping mom, that should make you very, very excited. It isn’t often we get some of the bells and whistles of the huge hospital grade pumps included in our everyday-use pumps.
According to Ameda,
Finesse mimics our best-in-class Ameda Platinum multi-user hospital pump waveform in a personal pump. This waveform technology helps deliver a smoother, more consistent feel in the vacuum pattern for mom’s comfort, which means more milk.
Pretty cool, right?
Ameda Finesse Key Features
When I first opened up the box I was amazed. The Ameda Finesse comes with a lot of accessories. I mean a lot.
Per Ameda’s product description, here is what you can expect to get when you purchase the Finesse:
- HygieniKit® Milk Collection System
- Proven FDA-cleared barrier designed to protect pump, tubing, and bottle against bacteria and viruses
- Closed system helps keep milk safe
- Fully assembled dual kit
- Natural Rhythmic Waveform for your comfort, which means more milk
- Quiet Technology
- Separate speed and suction dials with 32 fully customizable options for multi phase pumping
- Adaptable for single or double pumping
- 2-year warranty
- Easy-to-clean surface, contemporary look
- 6.7 in L x 4.25 in W x 3 in H
- 1.1 lbs
- Power with AC adapter or AA batteries* for worry-free access to pumping
- May include additional accessories such as additional flange sizes or milk cooling and storage solutions
- No BPA/DEHP/Latex
The pump I received came with the standard milk collection kit, a cute tote, a cooler bag with three ice packs, 6 milk collection bottle, it also included 3 different sized breastshields!
I was pleasantly surprised at how much was in the box. I remember getting my Ameda Purely Yours and it was just the basics.
Ameda Finesse Tote
I was really impressed by the tote bag. It is made with a heavy material with a subtle polka-dot pattern on it. It is not huge but is big enough to fit the Finesse pump, milk collection kits, and the cooler. There is not room for much else in the bag but it is nice that it is big enough to fit the cooler! It is significantly bigger than the tote that comes with the Ameda Purely Yours.
If you are a working mom, the fewer bags you carry, the better. You would still need to carry a purse or laptop bag or lunch, etc using this tote but all your pumping essentials would be in one place.
There are many one-bag solutions for working moms if you carry a lot to work each day. You can view my favorite Pump Bag line, here.
The Cooler
This was by far one of my favorite accessories that came with the Finesse. This cooler is great. It fits 6 milk collection bottle perfectly and includes three (!) ice packs.
There is also a little card included with some milk storage guidelines which was a nice added touch.
This cooler is well made and not flimsy by any means. It is the perfect size to use for pumping while away for your baby – not too big and not too small.
As I said, it fits 6 milk collection bottles but if you like to store your milk in the freezer bags or use a collection system like the Kiinde Twist, it will certainly hold much more than 6 bags.
What a great accessory to have included with the pump!
3 Different Sized Breastshields
I love that the newer pumps are automatically including variously sized breastshields. I am seeing it more and more often now. The Ameda Finesse includes a 25mm, 28.5mm, and a 30.5mm. The 28.5mm comes as an insert to be used inside the 30.5mm breastshield.
There are actually 4 additional sizes that can be purchased separately if you need a smaller or bigger size than what comes with the pump. You can also view Ameda’s best recommendation on how to properly fit your breastshield, here.
Since an improper fitting breastshield is the number one reason for nipple pain when pumping, I love that moms have options to be able to try and see what fits best.
Finesse Can be Used with Batteries
The Ameda Finesse is a portable pump. It takes 6-AA batteries. I have not tested the functionality on the batteries but will shortly and will update here once I do a more thorough test of this feature. But it is great that this already light-weight pump can be taken and used on the go!
Ameda Finesse Waveform Technology
Let’s talk about the waveform technology for a minute.
Ameda states that the Finesse includes the same waveform technology that is used in their hospital pump, the Ameda Platinum. I have not personally used the Ameda Platinum but I do know several moms who have had amazing results while using the Platinum in the hospital.
I was intrigued by the promise that this waveform technology created a more comfortable pumping experience.
I recently ran into the perfect situation to put that claim to the test with my Ameda Finesse.
If you follow me at all on Facebook, then you know my littlest love and I have been suffering from Thrush as of recent… One of the fun parts about thrush is the pain. I don’t know how else to describe this pain to you.
It honestly feels like glass shards tearing their way through your nipple. My eyes watered, my toes curled. and I was rigged as my baby latched and nursed. Every single time. It. Is. Horrible.
I have a pretty high pain tolerance (survivor of two natural childbirths here) but this pain was the absolute worst.
I know the basics of breastfeeding and how supply and demand works and I know that neglecting my left breast (the side with the pain, my right was perfect) would result in a low supply. So I latched my baby the best I could and tried to nurse through the pain but I often only lasted for a few minutes.
I decided to pull out the Ameda Finesse and try pumping hoping that their promise of a comfortable pump experience would be true despite my painful situation.
I started the suction and speed on LOW. I was cringing waiting for the pain. I slowly increased the speed waiting for the letdown.
To my surprise, I was able to pump quite comfortably even when my milk letdown and I increased the suction strength! My nipple was still slightly sore but I would not call it painful at all. My right side, which had no pain from the thrush, felt great!
One of my complaints about the Ameda Purely Yours was that the suction felt more like a tug. It is not the most comfortable pump. The Finesse is completely different and I could tell right away. It really does suck in more of a wave and mimics a more natural pattern like you baby would nurse.
I found the Ameda Finesse to be extremely comfortable to use. Despite the pain from thrush, I was able to pump 3 ounces in less than 15 minutes pumping.
The Ameda Finesse, in my opinion, is an extremely comfortable pump and does hold true to that promise. I was very impressed.
So What is the Ameda Finesse Lacking?
I have this same complaint about most of the Ameda pumps – they lack digital controls. They boast that it is simplicity. I get that. It is two dials that you turn to control the suction and speed. Easy peasy.
BUT the ability to switch from a massage mode (high speed, low suction) to a letdown/expression mode (low speed, high suction) with a push of the button is amazing.
I am spoiled since I own a lot (and I mean a lot. I do run a pumping blog…) of breast pumps. I have tried so many that I find things I love about certain pumps and wish all pumps could include those features. The digital controls are one of those features.
Also, a lot of digital pumps, like the Spectra S1, Milk Genie, Medela Freestyle, Medela Sonata all have the ability to record your prefer pump settings and run a program every time you pump. So you literally just turn the pump on and it does what you want it to. Amazing.
Now is the lack of digital controls a deal breaker? No, of course not. But it is a “nice to have.”
Bottomline
The Ameda Finesse is a great pump with a lot of features and accessories. It will work great for working moms and mom who need to pump a lot. It is portable, comfortable, and a strong pump.
I think Ameda did some great things with the Waveform Technology and am thrilled they included it in this personal pump.
The Ameda is available now for purchase! You can find it by clicking here!

Hi should I go with the Ameda Finesse or Spectra 2? I pumped for a year with the Ameda purely yours and really liked it but mostly got it because of the portable battery. I have the option to upgrade to Spectra 2 or the Finnesse and I just can’t decide.
I meant Spectra 1
See below!
I replied to you comment below- I included the S1, S2, Freestyle and Finesse in it =-)
Hi! Thank you for your very detailed review! 4 years ago I used the Ameda Purely Yours and it worked amazingly with my twins and I was able to exclusively pump for a year with them. This year my insurance if giving me the option to purchase the Ameda Finnesse or Spectra 2. However I can upgrade to Spectra S1 Plus which I will more than likely do because portability is huge for me as a working mom. So my question to you is would you suggest I get the Ameda Finnesse or Spectra S1 Plus? Look forward to your feedback. Thanks!
Also I’m able to upgrade to the Medela Freestyle. So that’s another option as well.
I included the Freestyle in my reply to you below!
Hi Ashley! If you had success with the Ameda Purely Yours, then any of the pumps you mentioned will work great in terms of your supply. Between the Spectra S2 and the Finesse, that’s a toss-up. I like the features of the S2 in terms of digital settings but it doesn’t have a battery option. The Finesse does take AA batteries so you have the ability to make it portable.
If you can upgrade to the Spectra S1, that would be my first choice of the 3. The built-in rechargeable battery is worth the upgrade to me. You also mentioned in a separate comment that you can upgrade to the Medela Freestyle. I am a huge lover of the Freestyle. If you need something compact and plan to pump on the go a lot, the Freestyle is definitely worth it! If you plan to pump stationary and aren’t needing to lug a pump with you, then the Spectra S1 or the Finesse is a good choice. But like I said, all will serve you well as far as ounces pumped.
To me, it will come down to how portable you need the pump and what features you want the pump to have. One thing to consider as well is since you already have the Ameda Purely Yours, you can use the pump parts interchangeably with the Finesse. That helps when you pump a lot and don’t have to buy extra sets. But the Finesse is the more basic in terms of controls of all the pumps… So you have options but you need to look and see what is important to you.
I hope this helps!
Have you gotten to try the Ameda Mya yet? I was just informed I may be able to get that one instead of the Finesse. How do they compare?
I have! I have a review in the works and a comparison coming but I can give you the basics here:
1) Mya comes with different parts and bottles vs other Ameda pumps so parts aren’t interchangeable.
2) Mya is much smaller in size than the Finesse
3) Finesse takes disposable batteries for the option to pump on the go, the Mya has a built-in rechargeable one.
4) Mya features digital controls and memory settings. Finesse does not – it has dial controls.
5) Pump suction and strength- both these pumps are similar in how they perform. I expressed about the same amount. so no difference there!
Overall, you can see that the Mya it meant to be a more portable pump. It is easy to carry around. If you have the option to get the Mya and plan to pump on the go, it might be a great option! You won’t be able to use any parts from the Purely Yours, though. So this decision will really come down to if you want to compact the pump or not. Hope this helps!
I’m debating between Medela PIS or the Ameda Finesse. I had the Ameda Purely Yours with my daughter and liked it, but want something quieter. I’ve read that the Ameda is 41 decibels and the Medela is 46 decibels. I’m unable to find how many decibels the Purely Yours is to compare from my previous experience. Which pump is quieter? Is the Medela a closed system as well? I also liked the control of speed and suction for the Purely Yours.
Hi! This is a great question. In terms of being a quiet pump, the Finesse isn’t loud. It certainly isn’t the quietest pump I have used but it is still fairly quiet as breast pumps go. It is quieter than the Purely Yours for sure, in my opinion.
As for the PIS vs the Finesse, I prefer the Finesse. They have a lot of similarities (both take batteries as an option for portability, both use dial controls, etc) but the thing that sways me to the Finesse is the overall pumping experience. It is much more comfortable to use. It feels closer to what breastfeeding feels like than the “tug” of the PIS. And, no, the PIS is not a closed system. This isn’t a huge deal but you would need to properly sanitize the tubing just like any other pump part.
I hope this helps!
Thank you. That does help very much. I’m probably going to end up going with the Finesse if it’s quieter than the Purely Yours. I already have all the extra bottles for the Ameda anyway.
The nice thing about the Purely Yours and the Finesse is that most of the parts are interchangeable. So the bottles can be used with both!
Upcoming first time mom and my insurance gives options between Ameda Mya and Finnesse. I will be rerutning back to work 4 months postpartum. I am torn on which to order?
Hi! Congrats on your baby!
Regarding the Finesse vs the Mya-
I have not yet personally used the Ameda Mya, though it is on my list to try. From the feedback I have gotten directly from moms who have used it, they seem to like it.
I think one of the biggest differences (outside of their sizes- the Mya being more compact but only slightly), is the fact that the Mya has a built-in rechargeable battery. The Finesse requires disposable batteries. So if having something more portable is important to you, then the Mya is a good choice.
They are both good pumps. I really like the Finesse, though I do wish it had a rechargeable battery option…
I contacted my insurance about getting a breast pump and the Ameda Finesse was listed as one of the options along with the Spectra S2 and Medela in Style. Your blog was immensely helpful deciding which one would be best. I liked that the Ameda had the closed system and manual settings that seem easy to use. I’d had a Medela model with my first but didn’t actually end up using it due to a myriad of factors. I plan on going back to work so I needed something that would be quiet and easy to use. Plus, I just assumed that it would come with everything listed here since I remembered my Medela coming with its own bag and accessories. Well you know what they say about assuming…. A word of caution to anyone reading: if you order through Cigna and Carecentrix, it is literally just the pump and hygiene kit. No bag, no cooler, only two 4 oz. bottles. I’m still happy about saving the hundred plus dollars on the pump, but I have to say I’m super disappointed I’m going to need to invest in those accessories for when I go back to work. I had checked with Aeroflow first, since that’s where you got yours, but the finesse isn’t currently listed on their site. So if the accessories are a big selling point for you like they were for me, make sure you check all that comes with it beforehand.
Thank you, Anisa, for sharing your experience! And this is a great point! Not all pumps come with all the same accessories, especially if ordering through your insurance. It’s very unfortunate that they tend to give out the most stripped-down version that they can. Some insurance companies do give a larger set… It just depends. So it’s great practice to ask like you pointed out! I am sure your comment will be very helpful to other moms. Thank you for taking the time!
I am expecting my first baby any day now and I cannot decide between the Ardo Calypso Essentials or the Ameda Finesse. Is one easier than the other? I read both of your reviews on both pumps. I want to be able to be mobile when I do go back to work, but I am also wondering which one of the pumps I should choose.
Hi Ashlee!
These are both great pumps. The Ardo Calypso is much quieter than the Finesse, in my opinion. Both run off batteries. Both are compact. I found the Finesse a little more gentle and comfortable to use than the Ardo Calypso. They are pretty comparable! I am leaning toward the Finesse just for the comfort but if the quiet factor is something that is important, that might tip it the other way for you!
Best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy and a healthy happy baby!
Hi! I am so grateful to have come across your blog while attempting to research my pump options for my second baby. With my first, I struggled with milk production, and pumping became a depressing, difficult ordeal that I toughed out as long as I could, until I was pumping seemingly endlessly, for less than an ounce, and finally gave up. I started with the Medela Pump In Style, and primarily used that. I then also purchased the Spectra S2 based on rave reviews, but it didn’t seem to change anything (other than being a bit more comfortable). My main concern is getting as much milk as I can. Given that, do you have any input on the following options covered by my insurance?
Both the Medela Pump In Style and Spectra S2 are covered again
Ameda Finesse
Lansinoh Signature Pro
Evenflo Deluxe
Evenflo Basic
Hygeia Enjoye
Motif Curve
Motif Duo
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and providing so much information in your blog!
Hi Rachel! Thank you for reaching out.
Your best bets out of the list you provided (outside of the Medela and Spectra) are the Finesse and the Hygeia. The Spectra and Finesse are my favorites out of the 4 though. Since you mentioned you own the Spectra, I would go with the Finesse.
I am curious about what went on with your first baby. Did you meet with a Lactation Consultant? How often were you pumping and when? Were you feeding formula as well to supplement? How often were you pumping vs bottle feeding? There are very few moms who medically have low milk supply (known as insufficient glandular tissue). Most causes of low milk supply can be overcome with proper technique and education. I highly suggest you work closely with a Lactation Consultant (bring your pump too!) this time around to get some help from day 1 and head off any issues or to help you understand what you can do once you encounter any. Rest assured that this time around might be completely different!
Hi Heather,
Firstly thank you so much for the time you take out to give thoughtful advice and reply to our questions. You’re one terrific mama!
I already have a spectra s2, and this time I qualify for several portable ones,
Ameda Mya, Motif Duo and Spectra S9.
I was wondering if you have any recommendations from these three.
Thank you again for all your help! Greatly appreciate it!
Hi! So I have used the Motif Duo (review post coming soon) and the Spectra 9 (full review, here). I like them both.
The Ameda Mya is something I have my eye on. As soon as I receive it, I will be reviewing it. I am very excited about that one based on the reviews I have gotten from other pumping moms. Based on the two pumps I have tried, I prefer the Spectra 9 over the Motif Duo. It’s a great pump but not as strong as the Spectra S2 but very good for a tiny portable pump and it has a lot of features. You can’t go wrong there!
The Ameda Mya might trump them both, however, based on my initial research. I love the Finesse but the digital controls and more compact size of the Mya is something I love seeing from Ameda! I will link my full review of the Mya once it’s complete but you have some great pumps to choose from!
Hi Heather,
With my first I was offered the Medela Instyle and it worked well, but this time my insurance is offering the following:
Ameda Finesse
Evenflo Advanced
Lansinoh Signature Pro
Ameda Mya
My main concern is output/quantity of milk produced. Do you have a preference on the above? There are good and bad reviews for all so I have no idea which one to choose.
Thank you so much for your help,
Mimi
HI Mimi!
I love the Ameda Finesse. It’s an amazingly comfortable pump that yields a good amount for me. It’s also small and easy to carry around.
I have heard amazing things about the Ameda Mya though. It is on my list to review so I will link that review here once I used it. I like the idea of it and what Ameda has done. Its tiny, quiet, digital controls (which the Finesse is not and that’s one of my biggest complaints). The reviews have been really good on it and the moms I’ve talked to love it. You can read more about the Mya, here.
Lack of milk production doesn’t seem to be an issue with it and if the Medela Pump in Style worked for you, I would imagine the Mya would be just as good if not better. I personally would go with the Mya! I hope this helps!
I am torn between the Spectra S1 and the Medela Sonata… both would require upgrades through my insurance, if they cover any at all. This is my 2nd, but I used the PISA last time and took forever to get 4 oz. Since I have a toddler I want something portable, but was also considering adding the freemie collection ups with either pump. Any thoughts on which pump is better? What do you think about switching out the flanges?
I will start by saying that I love both the S1 and the Sonata.
The Sonata is actually the pump I am currently using. They are fairly close in a lot of areas as far as pump strength, performance like digital controls and memory mode, they are both portable and rechargeable, they are about the same size, both are quiet pumps…
So here are a few things to consider that might help you narrow it down:
1) The Freemie cups are NOT compatible with the Sonata. They do work with the S1, however, if you are looking to use them.
2) The Sonata takes different parts than the PISA, so you can’t use any of those parts from your previous pump.
3) The PISA parts CAN be used with the S1 if you buy the adapters. This can save you from having to buy new parts.
Both pumps will yield more milk than the PISA so I think you are smart to upgrade here. The S1 is slightly more comfortable to pump with than the Sonata in my opinion but I like the smart options offered by the Sonata more through the app. Really helped me track my pumping sessions, ounces pumped, and milk baby was taking while I was gone vs what I had pumped to store. Amazing for any working mom. The app connects to the Sonata so it is a true smart pump.
You have two great options to consider so I hope I gave you some more info to consider while trying to narrow it down!
And to address your question about switching out the flanges for the Freemie Cups. Personally, the Freemie Cups did not work for me. I was never able to yield the same amount of milk as I could when I pumped without them. I do have large breasts and have nothing but a theory to back this up but I feel like that might have something to do with it. I just couldn’t get a good seal. They never felt secure enough in my bra. I pump 1000 times better with a good old pumping bra. However, I know many pumping moms who love the Freemie Cups so it might just be one of those products you have to try for yourself to see if it works for you!
I’m currently pregnant with my 2nd and 3rd (yes, twins) – My insurance covers the Ameda Finesse this time (previously with my first child they covered the Ameda Purely Yours which I didn’t like)
I’ve been looking at the Spectra S1 and S2 (which isn’t covered by insurance but don’t mind purchasing on my own if it works better since the Ameda didn’t quite work the first time so I’m skeptical on the Finesse) – my insurance did already send the finesse so if I need something small and portable I can always use that. My question is what do you recommend between the S1 and S2 – are they the same quality? Strength? Hospital grade?
Thanks! Finding these reviews has been very helpful!
Hi! Huge congrats on your twins! How exciting!
You will like the Finesse a lot better than the Purely Yours. It is a much better pump in many ways. But to answer your question about the Spectra S1 and S2, they are actually the same pump. The main difference is that the S1 has a built-in rechargeable battery. The S2 does not have a battery and can only be used plugged in. If you need a portable pump, then the S1 is worth the upgrade.
Hi heather I’m so glad I came across your blog, it was really helpful reading your review on the ameda finesse. My insurance covered this pump but I haven’t used it since I got spoiled when I left the hospital and they lent me the Medela Symphony. I have the option to give it back or rent it out for less than 50 dollars. I tried the pump in style I was given as a present but it took half an hour to get 4 ounces when I get 5-7 ounces with the symphony. When I opened the finesse I told myself there is no way this would work for me and didn’t bother to use it. My question is since you compared it to the pump in style should I try it? It looks very convenient to travel with unlike the symphony and I need something convenient to travel around since I’m pump exclusively. I am going back to work in a few months and I can’t imagine being glued to a pump for half an hour just to get 4 ounces.
HI Cat! Congratulations on your baby!
So here is the thing, you are using an extremely strong pump (the Symphony). The Finesse likely won’t stand up to that comparison. The Finesse will do the job but yes, you will likely find the output to be less than the Symphony. If you can rent the Symphony for $50 total I would say go for it! If you mean $50 a month (as some plans run in this range), I would pass. It sounds like you have a good supply and might just need to add a pumping session or 2 to overcome the lost ounces.
You will be hard pressed to find a more efficient pump than the Symphony. There is a reason it costs over $1,000!
Hi! Thanks for all the information and breaking it down so well. After my first baby I rented the Medela Pump from the hospital and had good results for the time I used it. On my 2nd baby I used the Medela Pump In Style and had good results with it as well. I had another Medela that I kept at home just in case but it wasn’t as powerful as the Pump In Style which I kept at work. Milk production wasn’t really ever an issue. I am now pregnant with our 3rd and wondering if I should stick with what I know or try something new because a lot has changed in the pumping world in the last 2 years. I have a couple friends that have the Spectra S2 and love it, they swear by it! And in fact tell me its way better than the Medela ever was, but I am not sure why model they are comparing it to. I have another friend that really loved her Ameda Finess. My insurance will cover all 3 of these options; Ameda Finess, Medela Pump in Style, or the Spectra S2. Given these choices what would you choose? I will have a room at work to pump in so portability isn’t really a worry of mine at this time. I figure I will set up shop at work and leave my station as is and will set up a pumping station at home when needed. Because i will be pumping on the regular especially after I return to work I would like the pump to be easy to assemble and dis-assemble and the parts easy to wash. (I breast fed my daughter until she was almost 2 but bottle and breast fed until at least 1 and plan to do the same this time around) I think on my first pregnancy insurance provided the Lansinoh and it had a MILLION pieces to put together to pump which meant a million pieces to wash every time. I hated it and that is why I rented from the hospital while I needed a pump.
So just curious to what you would pick given these options. Thanks so much and I am very excited to find your blog and start following you on social media!
Hi! Congrats on your third baby! I loved having 3 by the way… Great number! I, of course, have 4 now…
So the 3 pumps you mentioned: Spectra S2, Medela Pump in Style, and Ameda Finesse are all amazing pumps. You will find their suction strength quite similar so power-wise they are pretty close.
Like you, my first pump was the Medela Pump in Style. It really is a good pump but after seeing what was out there I realized how limited I was with it. The Ameda Finesse is very similar in how it functions. They both have manual dials that allow you to set your speed and suction. Nothing fancy but very effective.
The Spectra S2, however, offers a digital screen and a lot more control options. One thing I love is the ability to set my preferred pump pattern and just hit the start button and have to pump switch in and out of expression and massage mode without me doing anything. The Spectra is also one of the more comfortable pumps I have used but if you have used the Medela Pump in Style for some time than you likely aren’t too sensitive.
I personally would go with the S2 if having a portable pump with a battery option is not an issue (the S2 does not have a battery. It’s sister the S1 is the one with the battery). You do have a few more attachments that you need to clean vs the Medela Pump in Style BUT the S2 is a closed system so you don’t need to sanitize or worry about the tubing on the Spectra S2 so to me it’s a trade-off. But Medela does have fewer parts than both the Ameda and Spectra.
I still would go with the S2, though. I hope this helps and look forward to seeing you around!
For a first time mommy, would you still recommend the S2? My insurance offers all three of these options listed in the comment above and I have no clue which one I should order. I have no experience? Reading reviews on Amazon and other places just aren’t helping. I would love your suggestion
Hi! So, my answer to these types of questions is always: it depends.
The reason I say that is, while the S2 is a fantastic pump, it may not meet all your needs as a pumping mom. The biggest drawback to it? It is not portable as it does not have the option to run off a battery pack. The Spectra S1 is the version that has a built-in battery.
So if you are a mom who needs to pump on the go a lot without access to a power source, I would go with the Finesse. If you won’t be pumping on the go and are fine to pump plugged in all the time than the S2 is an amazing option and would be my pick! I hope this helps!
I’m curious to know how you would choose between the Spectra9 Advance vs. the Ameda Finesse. I understand that the Spectra9 Advance has digital controls and memory to store your preference, that Ameda doesn’t– but when it comes to power and sustainability over the long term, what would you suggest? I will not be returning to work, at least that I can foresee, so I won’t need the discreetness of the slim Spectra 9, but I do plan to pump to keep a storage supply for when Grammy wants baby time and I may need a break during the day. Just not sure which route to take here. Thanks for any imput!
Hi! While I love how compact the S9 is, I prefer the Finesse overall. Any pump that runs on batteries will lose strength when the battery power gets below 50% and keep losing. They both do this for me. My Finesse lasts longer at a higher suction, however. BUT something to consider– the Finesse takes disposable batteries. It is not a built-in rechargeable battery. If you plan to pump on the go without access to a power source often, this is something to consider!
Hope this helps!
Hi there!
I am doing a lot of pumping on the go now that I am back to work. I am going through batteries like crazy bc I pump to and from work. Is there a car charger that works with the Ameda Finesse? I have seen ones for the “purely you” but not for the Finesse and desperately need one!
Hi Missi! Yes, Ameda does have a car adapter for the Finesse. It is a 9V and they sell it directly on their site. You can find it, here. The initial description says Purely Yours but in the detailed description, you will see that includes the Purely Yours Ultra and Finesse. I hope that helps!
Hi Heather!
Thank you for your expertise in this blog. I have a slightly different circumstance and unfortunately (or fortunately) I have too many options to choose from. I am a working Mom, but I work from my home office so discretion isn’t my highest priority. I do, however, need the convenience of being able to multitask while pumping. With my first daughter, she never latched and my milk never really came in despite pumping every two hours religiously with the Medela Pump in Style. I’m hoping I have a better supply this time, but if not, I’d like to choose the pump that will best increase my chances. Insurance provides me with several options at no charge and a few with an additional co-pay. Of the pumps listed below, which would you recommend for my situation?
Thanks in advance,
Julie
1) Medela Pump in Style
2) Medela Freestyle ($200 extra)
3) Medela Sonata ($235 extra)
4) Ameda Finesse
5) Evenflo Deluxe Advanced
6) Lansinoh Signature Pro
7) Lansinoh Smart Pump Deluxe
8) Freemie Independence
9) Spectra S2
10) Medela Advanced Personal Double ($79 extra)
Hi Heather!
Thank you for being such a wealth of knowledge. I am expecting baby #2 in about 6 weeks and need to order a pump. With #1, she wouldn’t latch and my supply want extremely low despite pumping religiously with the Madela Pump-in-Style. I am a working Mom, but I work from home so discretion isn’t my biggest priority. I am a multi-tasker so I like to get as much done as possible while pumping. Based on my details, can you recommend which pump would be best for me? All are covered by insurance unless I noted an additional co-pay
1) Madela Pump in Style
2) Madela Freestyle ($200 extra)
3) Madela Sonata ($235 extra)
4) Ameda Finesse
5) Evenflo Delux Advanced
6) Lansinoh Signature Pro
7) Lansinoh Smart Pump Delux
8) Madela Advanced Personal Double ($79 extra)
9) Freemie Independence
10) Spectra S2
There are just too many choices….
Thanks in advance!!!
Julie
Hi Julie!
Wow, you are very lucky your insurance gives you sooo many options to choose from! So you mentioned you had trouble pumping enough with the Medela Pump in Style. Based on that, I would recommend you look at the Medela Freestyle, Spectra S2, and the Medela Sonata. The Finesse is similar to the Medela Pump in Style for me as far as ounces pumped/suction strength so Sounds like you need something a little stronger.
The Freestyle is a great one to splurge on if you want the portability of it. You can fit it in your purse or even walk around while pumping. It is an amazing pump!
I love the Sonata for how comfortable it is and its technology. Its very portable too and is the pump I am currently using. Love it!
The Spectra S2 is an awesome pump and if you don’t want to pay the upgrade charges would be my pick. It’s very strong and very comfortable to use. The only downside is that it does not have a battery so it needs to be plugged in. If you don’t need to be mobile while pumping, then I would go with the S2 to save some money.
I hope this helps!
Thanks so much!!!! I reposted this on accident because I thought my first post didn’t go through. Please disregard the second one.
No problem! I gave you a lot to consider but I hope I helped you narrow it down!
Hi Heather,
Thank you for this blog. I already have the Spectra S2 pump from my first pregnancy. My insurance will cover another pump. I love the Spectra S2, but it isn’t portable friendly. My other options are Medela PISA, Ameda Finesse, and Hygeia Enjoye. Based on your reviews of those three pumps, Ameda Finesse is the best portable option. I had great milk supply with my first baby. I’ve heard various review from friends. For portability, I’m leaning towards getting the Ameda Finesse.
The Ameda Finesse is definitely my pick from those 3 as well. I really love this pump and think you will too. It’s very portable! Must more so than the other two you listed. I am glad you found this review helpful! I don’t think you will regret going with the Finesse!
Hi,
I know this is a bit of an older post but I just stumbled across is in doing some pump research. It was super helpful and informative so thank you!! Through my insurance I have the ability to get either the Medela in style or Ameda finesse. I was wondering which way you would go between the 2? Thanks!!
Hi! If I had to choose between those two, I might go with the Ameda Finesse.
They are both around the same suction strength but I think there are two things that give the Finesse the edge here:
1) It’s smaller and easier to carry around.
2) It’s more comfortable to use.
I hope this helps!
Thank you for this blog and for your candor! I am about to be a new mom, breastfeeding for the first time (hopefully as I have anxiety over this) and have an opportunity to choose between 5 breast pumps:
Ardo Calypso Essentials to go Double Electric Breast Pump
Medela Pump In Style Advance Double Electric Breast Pump
Spectra S1 Double Electric Breast Pump
Ameda Finesse Double Electric Breast Pump
Medela Freestyle Double Electric Breast Pump
I will not be a working mom, but would greatly appreciate knowing which one of these five you would suggest? After reading your reviews, I am guessing it is Medela FreeStyle, Spectra S1, or Ameda Finesse? Thank you!
Hi Jaime!
Huge congrats on your pregnancy! Being a first-time mom isn’t always easy but truthfully, I think the anticipation and fear of the unknown are actually worse. All you can do is be as informed as possible and trust your body to do what it was created for!
As for the breast pump- you absolutely nailed my favorites from your list! You really can go with any of those listed and will do amazing.
I love the Freestyle for its pump strength and how easy it is to carry around. The Spectra is amazing for comfort and strength, of course, but it is one of the most comfortable pumps I have used. Great for moms who have sensitive nipples. The Ameda Finesse would be my third choice out of this list. I think the Freestyle and Spectra edge it out slightly.
If you plan to be on the go at all, I suggest going with the Freestyle for sure. But you will be happy with either pump. Really comes down to your personal situation and how portable you want the pump to be.
I hope this helps!
I really appreciate your response. Thank you for making at least one of the many decisions to make much easier!
No problem!! Good luck!
Hi how loud is this pump in comparison to the Ardo? Is it quieter than the Medela?
Hi Gina,
The pump itself is not very loud but still makes noise. The Ardo is much quieter, however, and is often talked about as one of the quietest on the market.
The Finesse is definitely quieter than the Medela Pump in Style and is around the same as the Freestyle. But the Medela Sonata is hands-down quieter than the Finesse. So just depends on which Medela pump you are referring to.
I hope this helps!
Hi Heather!! I’m expecting my second child this summer! With my first, I wasn’t able to produce and my daughter actually wound up on a soy formula. So this will be my second attempt and praying it works this time to pump. My insurance will pay for either the Finesse or the Spectra S2. What are your thoughts on the two of them for a Mom who tried to use the Medela and had no luck (it was also quite painful) and which one is better for production? I’ve heard good things about both so I’m really conflicted on which one I should get
Hi Melissa!
Congratulation on your second baby!
So I think you said a few important things in your comment/question here: 1) You suffered from a low supply with your daughter, and 2) You mentioned comfort was an issue.
The Spectra S2 is a stronger pump compared to the Finesse so I think given your history you will benefit greatly from having a hospital grade-strength pump. It is one of the best pumps on the market for a mom with low supply. It is not as portable as the Finesse and has to be used plugged into an outlet (no battery option) but I think it will be your best bet between the two to help you be successful.
Also, the Spectra S2 is incredibly comfortable to use. It is very, very gentle compared to the Medela Pump in Style. You can also purchase optional massage inserts to add additional cushion to the flange. You can find the massage inserts on our Spectra Pumps Parts page, here.
I hope this helps and I wish you the best as you start this new journey!
Hello,
I went back to work when my son was 3 weeks old and used the Medela Advanced Breast Pump. I loved it. My son is now 11 years old and I am now pregnant again and will be going back to work full time. I need to find a good pump. Any advice on choosing between the Ameda Finesse™ with Dottie Tote or sticking with the Medela? Thank you!
Hi Heather!
Congratulations on your baby! The current Medela Pump in Style Advanced is slightly better than the Ameda Finesse in terms of ounces pumped, in my opinion. I always pump more with my Medela PISA. With that said, I love the Finesse! The Finesse will get the job done. It is a good pump. The Medela PISA can also be a little rough. It isn’t the most comfortable pumping experiences (not painful though, pumping should never be painful). If you have sensitive nipples, the Finesse is a good option since the waveform technology really helps eliminate the tugging.
So it really comes down to preference. If you struggled with your milk supply at all or found you didn’t pump a lot per session, you may want to stick to the Medela. Otherwise, the Finesse is a great pump! Hope that helps!
Hi – the Finesse is one of my free options through insurance. I’ll be a first time mom and plan to be pumping when I go back to work. I’m curious if the Finesse will be compatible with a hands free bra and if it’s compatible with pumping directly into other brands of bottles and disposable bags (I’m hoping to use the Tommee Tippee line).
Hi Meredith,
The Finesse is compatible with hands-free bras, yes. It fits both my Simple Wishes and Clip and Pump hands-free bras. It does NOT fit my new style of the Medela Bustier because they changed the design since their breastshield snap into the collection kit (its two pieces instead of one) so it’s not wide enough to get the Ameda breastshield into.
The Tommee Tippee Pump and Go system works great with the Ameda Finesse! If you have the starter kit, it comes with an adapter for the Ameda pump but I believe it only contains one so if you double pump, you would need to purchase the adapter kits separately to get the extra adapter. It’s super cheap and you only need the 2-pack one. You can see that, here.
It also works with the Kiinde feeding system and that starter kit comes with a double set of adapters so no need to purchase extra. Both are great feeding systems!
4 years ago when I had my daughter I used the Ameda Purely yours and loved it. I felt like it was reliable, comfortable and really got the job done every time. I wanted to stick with Ameda Purely Yours this time and still have my old pump, but since I get a free one from work, I wanted to get a second and leave one at work and one at home (genius, right?) Through my insurance only the Ameda Finesse is available in addition to the Hygia Enjoye and the Spectra S2. I was all but ready to order the Ameda Finesse – but it is missing the little “cup holders” I was used to with the purely yours that I love! I can’t imagine how many times I would have spilt my milk if I didn’t have those little guys. So first – do you have any comments about if the bottles topple over if not held when you are done pumping?
Also – I was interested in your comments about the electric dials/settings that you can program. So I am thinking about going with the Spectra 2 but I am hesitating becuase I’m not sure how difficult it could be to keep up with two different sets of parts… and do you think it would be wierd to use one pump and work and different one at home? (Of course, most of the time I’m at home, I’ll probably be breastfeeding instead of pumping, but still…). Thanks for any help you can give!
Hi Sarah!
I think it is a great idea to have one at home and one at work! So first things first, I am totally with you on missing the “cup holders” on the Finesse! The issue with the Ameda pumps is that their tubing is thicker and heavier than most other brands. I find this does cause the milk collection kit to fall over. I learned real fast to unhook the tubing before taking the breastshields out of my pumping bra. Otherwise, I did have an issue with it toppling over at times. UGH, every pumping mom’s worst nightmare! But unhooking the tubes seems to solve that issue!
So, now to the topic of which pump you should get… I completely agree that having both pumps be an Ameda pump would make the parts situation super easy since they are interchangeable between the Purely Yours and Finesse. BUT you will have to wash and sanitize the pump parts each day after work anyway… So not sure it is too big of a deal but it would be nice to have a duplicate set on hand just in case.
I do like the features of the S2 better than the Finesse when it comes to the digital controls. I think this comes down to where you pump and if you are multitasking. The beauty of the S2 is that you get to set your preferred pump pattern and it follows it automatically or you can change it with the push of a button. With the Finesse, you will need to be manually turning the dials to mimic that same pattern (massage mode and then expression mode). The S2 is also a stronger pump, however, if you were able to successfully pump with the Purely Yours then you will have zero issues with the Finesse.
If you have your hands free and are okay with lacking the digital features, the Finesse will work amazingly well for you. I really love it. I hope this helps! Let me know if I can answer any other questions for you!
I wanted to post my own experience here, as it differed from the above review.
I started using the Ameda Finesse pump with my second child, around 4 months. Previously I had used the standard Medela pump that was given to me at the hospital. I was intrigued by the customization available with this pump, and its size. While I really wanted to like it, there were a few issues I had that made it less convenient than I had hoped. The shape of the actual pump is great. It’s compact, and I like it a lot better than many square pumps that can be bulky. The Ameda pump is better for traveling and packing it in a suitcase for this reason. However, on a daily basis, taking the pump parts back and forth to work for washing was not convenient. The shape of the flanges and how they connect to the tubing makes it bulky for working moms. I also found the connections a bit awkward at times. The other feature I was really looking forward to with this pump was the customization of speed and suction. In the end, I didn’t find that I was adjusting it much, and unless you are using a hands free bra or something else to hold everything in place, your hands aren’t free to make adjustments as you pump (90% of the time I do use a hands free bra, but not always). It could be if I had trouble producing milk, this feature might have been more valuable to me, but I didn’t find it brought any real benefit. The pump is also advertised as quiet, but I didn’t find it to be especially quiet, nor did I find it to be particularly comfortable. I was not impressed by the wave technology, as some others were, and found the mechanism to be uncomfortable for me. Instructions were good, and the pump worked well – it was more some of the design features that weren’t as convenient for me. I was given this breast pump to try as part of the weeSpring Parent Panel.
Hi, Christine
Thank you for providing us with your experience! You pointed out some great things when it comes to the Finesse.
I did want to provide some further info for any moms who might be considering the Finesse – You mentioned the bulkiness of the flanges. When comparing the flanges to the Medela, the Ameda is seemingly bulkier, but the difference is that the Medela is an open system pump and the Ameda is closed.
All the closed system pumps will have an extra diaphragm that connects the flange to the tubing to act as a barrier. That may not have been something you were used to and it does add an extra part, so I hear ya. But I have to say, that the Ameda pumps, in my opinion, have been some of the easiest to put together and tote around. The pump is not bulky at all. And with any pump, you will have to carry around the various pump parts, unfortunately.
The customization of speed and suction – I have to agree this was one of the things I didn’t love about this pump either. While you can control the suction and speed, they are dials. I don’t see this as customization, just the ability to control it. Digital pumps like the Spectra S1 or Milk Genie or Medela Freestyle, offer a lot more in terms of customization because it will remember your pump settings and will automatically follow that pattern (no hands required!). I do not consider this a shining feature of the Ameda Finesse at all. It’s really a basic feature that all pumps come with… And you are right, it requires your hands to be free to control properly.
I am a huge supporter of moms learning to use their pump settings correctly. It is why I love the digital pumps so much because it helps moms achieve the max milk pumped without really doing much. It can make a big difference in how much you pump and how you achieve a letdown.
Using a pump like the Finesse that does not have a massage mode or letdown mode, means mom need to set the controls to mimic those settings.(This article explains some of that for moms who want to capitalize on their letdown and learn how to control their pump.)
Once you learn it, however, using the Finesse becomes very easy so it’s not a deal breaker in my opinion BUT I agree that you need your hands-free and a good pumping bra is a must. Very important point for moms who pump and work – So, thank you for pointing that out!
I am so sad the wave technology wasn’t for you! I think that is a great example of how all moms are different. I have heard nothing but great things from moms who have used the Finesse and the Ameda hospital grade that the technology is from. It really is very different from a traditional pump. But there are moms who can’t pump with a Medela or a Spectra while thousands of others love them. So wonderful to hear your feedback on that to give our readers another viewpoint.
As always, it is great to get some additional feedback, so thank you for dropping this comment to let us know some of the things you experienced! Take care!
I am expecting my first baby in January and I’m looking at my breast pump options available to me through insurance. The Ameda Finesse is one of my options but after reading plenty of reviews I’m torn between this pump, the Spectra S2 and the Medela PISA Starter Set. The Ameda Finesse comes with a lot more accessories and tote bag while the S2 and PISA are more basic options and I would need to purchase additional accessories and a bag out of pocket. It sounds like the Finesse is better than it’s predecessor but I’m still not sure which one to pick. Most people seem to have the Medela because it has been around the longest but I’ve seen a lot of positive reviews of the S2 and now this new offering from Ameda has me more confused than ever. Since I am not yet nursing, I don’t know if I have any specific issues that I need to address but I will be pumping at work full time. What do you recommend?
Hi Christi,
Congratulations on your upcoming little arrival!
All three of these pumps, the S2, Finesse, and PISA, each have their pros and cons. All three are strong pumps and would be perfect for maintaining a healthy supply while working. Here are a few things to consider:
– The S2 is the strongest pump of the three but only slightly.
– The S2 and Finesse are both closed system. The PISA is open system.
– The PISA and Finesse both have the option to run off of batteries to make them portable. The S2 does not. It only works when plugged in.
– PISA and Finesse parts are easier to buy in stores (Spectra would be online only)
In my opinion, the S2 and Finesse are better pumps than the PISA. I pump more milk with them vs the PISA. I also think the PISA is the most uncomfortable pump when using the three. If it was me, it would come down to the S2 or the Finesse, here.
The Finesse has something really special in its wave technology. The way this pump preforms is not like anything I have tried before. It empties the breast very gently but efficiently. The only way I can describe it is that other pumps tug and pull. The Finesse is more of a gentle massage. It is extremely comfortable. You pointed out that you will get more for your buck, so to speak, in that the Finesse comes with a lot of accessories. The tote bag is cute which is a plus.
The S2 is in its own right a very comfortable pump (one of the best on the market in comfort). I like the setting controls on the S2 much better than the Finesse. The S2 is digital and has the ability to switch from massage mode to expression mode with the push of a button (the Finesse is done manually using its dials). You can also record your pump settings and it will replay that for you, which is amazing. The S2, however, is not portable (though you could purchase a power bank or converter to make it portable… I have those listed on the Spectra Pump Parts Page). You also do not get as many accessories with the S2.
I think what it comes down to is personal preference.
If you are into the technology of using the digital settings and are okay with using the pump plugged into the wall and want one of the strongest personal pumps on the market, then the S2 is a great choice.
If you are okay with controlling the pump manually (which is easy to do once you figure out your milk letdown) and if you need a portable pump (though it runs on disposable batteries) and want an extremely comfortable pumping experience, the Finesse is your pump.
You will have a good experience with either! I hope this info was helpful and didn’t confuse you even more haha. Both great pumps.
Let me know which you decide on or if you have any other questions!
Take care,
Heather Grace
Hi Sarah,
Yes, the parts from the Ameda Purely Yours do fit the Finesse. It’s one of the great things about this pump that Ameda kept the parts consistent.
