Lactation Supplement & Tea Reviews

There are a lot of different supplements on the market today claiming to aid in lactation. Some work and some don’t work as well.

So how do you know what is best?

There are a few natural herbs that do work in helping increase your milk supply. A few of those are:

  1. Fenugreek
  2. Blessed Thistle
  3. Fennel Seed
  4. Goat’s Rue

There is a variety of combinations that you can buy. You can get single herb supplements, blends, supplements in pill form, teas, and even cookies. Yes, you read that right, I said cookies. The possibilities and combinations are endless.

I  like the blend supplements best which means taking one pill has several herbs in it. It is easier to take one pill versus taking 5-6 different ones a day. If you are like me, then simply taking Fenugreek alone, for example, won’t give you much in terms of results.

I am also a big tea drinker, so lactation teas were always something I had on hand. Not everyone loves lactation teas. If you like tea, then you will like most lactation teas. You can always add honey or a touch of sugar if you need it sweet. I am a black tea drinker, so no sweetener for me.

Back to the cookies. Did you know there is such a thing as lactation cookies? Well, there is and they taste great (well, most of them). Lactation cookies typically contain brewers yeast as the active lactation ingredient which is very helpful in aiding lactation. Try some! Who doesn’t want to add a cookie to their daily routine? I mean, it’s for the baby…

    Hi Heather,

What did you find gave you the best results? Or did you do a mix of things in combination?

I was lucky that eating lots and lots of lactation cookies helped me (my mantra: its for the baby! Just one more!). I’d love to know a bit more about the teas you have tried, particularly their taste? I considered making a Fenugreek tea, but I don’t really enjoy the flavour…

Anyway, I’m glad to see your website out there promoting breastmilk. The low rates of breastfeeding is truly astounding.

    Cheers,
    Tana

      Hi Tana,

I used to take a combo of things that I feel really helped. The Motherlove Special Blend is a winner. I did not have good results with Fenugreek alone so the blended formulas with things like Blessed Thistle and Goat’s Rue produced some impressive results for me.

I also drank Mother’s Milk Tea daily. It has a mild licorice flavor. I will say I do not like licorice but I enjoyed the tea so it isn’t that strong. It is an herbal tea so if you aren’t used to drinking them, it might take some getting used to. It is an acquired taste. A little honey helps too if your like your tea sweet.

I did not know there were supplements you could take for lactation. Wish I’d seen this article back when I was breastfeeding. I think I would go for the supplements more than I would the tea as I am not a big tea drinker. Does it change the flavor of the tea, or still tea flavor? Even more than these, lactation cookies! Now, this is a GREAT idea! Having babies these days is so much better with all the different alternative ways to help in breast feeding.

The lactation teas are herbal teas so they don’t taste sweet or fruity. I wouldn’t liken it more to the green tea family then the black tea. Each blend of tea is different of course depending on the ingredients. Mother’s Milk Tea, for example, has Anise in it which gives off a licorice flavor. So the flavor really depends on what it is made with.

Lactation cookies are my personal favorites too. The Milkin’ Cookies are sooooo good. I highly recommend them!
