In need of a supply boost? Perhaps you have tried Fenugreek, lactation cookies, eating oatmeal, drinking lot of water, etc, etc, etc… It can be frustrating to find that perfect combination that works for your body.
In the early days of nursing my first baby, I was concerned about sustaining a milk supply once I returned to work. I tried all the above and more!
For me, the best results came from adding one specific and powerful herb to my daily routine – Goat’s Rue.
What is Goat’s Rue?
When I first heard of Goat’s Rue I had no idea what to think. I honestly thought it was something that came from goats. It is in fact, a plant and no, it does not come from goats.
It is a powerful herb that has been used for centuries to aid in lactation in mothers and animals.
The leaves stimulate development of mammary tissue to increase breast size. It is one of the most potent herbs to increase breast milk in women who have difficulty breastfeeding because of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), previous breast surgeries or adoption. Large amounts may lower blood sugar levels.
Goat’s rue grows 2-3 feet tall with branching stems and oval leaves. The long flower stalk produces many light purple to pink flowers similar to those in the pea family to which it belongs.
Goat’s rue is widely used by European dairy farmers to quickly increase milk yields in cows which is said to be up to 50%.
Goat’s Rue has been used for centuries even at one point was thought to be effective against the plague.
Lactating mothers have long since praised Goat’s Rue for increasing their milk supply.
Motherlove Goat’s Rue
Motherlove is one of my favorite brands.
It was founded in 1987 by Kathryn Higgins. It started as a small business out of her home where she shared herbs she used in her own pregnancies with other mothers.
The company today has grown internationally and with their products being sold in hospitals, pharmacies, natural food stores, and speciality retailers in over 40 countries. Not bad for being “home grown.”
One unique thing about Motherlove is that all their herbs are organically grown on their own 120-acer ranch in Colorado. This family business has a commitment to the quality of their products as well as a love for doing things the “old fashion way” which is refreshing.
There are so many choices out there when it comes to products and it can be hard to know which brands to trust. Motherlove has a quality that is in a league of their own.
Motherlove Goat’s Rue uses alcohol-free liquid concentrate in vegetarian capsules. It does not contain any milk, dairy, egg, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, or gluten.
I love that Motherlove products are organically grown. Knowing their herbs were not exposed to unnecessary chemicals really makes this brand stand out to me.
The ingredients are simply Goat’s rue herb, non-GMO soy lecithin, modified vegetable cellulose, and coconut oil.
For best results it is advised to take 1 capsule 4 times per day. Women over 175 lbs should take 2 capsules 3 times per day. You can take it with a small amount of liquid (1-2 oz.). Like all Motherlove supplements, it is advised to avoid additional liquids 15 minutes before and after each use. That can be annoying but it’s not too long to wait and trust me, it makes a difference.

Does Motherlove Goat’s Rue Work?
Simply? From experience, yes, it does work.
I mentioned that I was doing everything short of standing on my head trying to increase my supply when preparing to return to work after my first baby. The only supplement I knew to take was Fenugreek.
Fenugreek alone works for many moms. I didn’t notice much of a difference with just the Fenugreek so I started looking up other options and that is when I came across Motherlove Goat’s Rue.
I started taking the recommended 1 pill 4 times a day. A typical pumping session got me about 2 ounces (1 ounce per side) but two days after taking the Goat’s Rue I was pumping 3.5 ounces. A noticeable difference.
After a week or so, I added back in the Fenugreek and was pleasantly surprised that I was able to get 4 ounces per session. I had read that the two together was a winning combo so it didn’t hurt to try.
I had a lot of success taking Goat’s Rue. Most moms who try it will say the same. The reviews are relatively positive. I do recommend trying it and adding Fenugreek if you don’t see a large enough boost.
I highly recommend Motherlove Goat’s Rue! Great and powerful supplement from a great company!
